Visiting Big Bend Country
The time is right to discover West Texas. From Anthony and El Paso in Far West Texas; interesting sites like the Caverns of Sonora or Monahans Sand Hills near Highway 20; or fabled old-west towns like San Angelo, Abilene and Amarillo – take your time on your travels across the Texas plains and West Texas. Exit off Interstate 20 near Odessa to explore the Permian Basin East Loop. Take a southern loop off Interstate 10 for a detour through Texas Big Bend country, or check out the El Paso uplands with Franklin Mountains State Park before you exit the state.
El Paso blends the cultures of Mexico, the Old West and the modern US in the stark beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert. Unique and beautiful El Paso is a thriving city with a culture all its own. Take a stroll through Arts Festival Plaza on Friday’s April through September for Alfresco Fridays - enjoy evening performances by the best regional musicians. Enjoy El Paso’s natural surroundings, and join 2011 Celebration of Our Mountains events through November. Hike the Pine Tree Loop Trail at Aguirre Springs on October 8th or take a day hike through Oliver Lee State Park November 5th. Events are organized and are a wonderful way to discover El Paso and the surrounding outdoors.
Visit Sonora, a charming small West Texas town, and feel the spirit of old-west cowboys and outlaws. Walk along Main Street and Plum Street in Sonora, the same roads Will Carver rode through town. Stop at the Mercantile Building on Main near Water Avenue for lunch, and history buffs don’t miss the Old Sonora Ice House Ranch Museum for details of Sonora’s history and heritage.
The formations of the Caverns of Sonora are a must see. Take a guided tour through the National Natural Landmark where over 95% of the formations remain in active growth. The Caverns of Sonora are one of West Texas’ little known gems. The hiking trails of the Easton Hill Nature Center are ideal to stretch your legs and enjoy the wonderful fall weather of West Texas. Just off Interstate 10 “The Hill” as it’s known by locals offers 37 acres of pristine wildlife and natural surroundings along with extraordinary views of the Sonora area.
Established across from Historic Fort Concho, San Angelo is a cultural and economic hub of West Texas. Enjoy downtown San Angelo as you stroll along the Concho River on the city’s river walk. Source of unique Concho Pearls, the waters of the Concho River, are celebrated in San Angelo. Near the Celebration Bridge, the River Stage and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, you will see the mermaid statue honoring the Pearl of the Conchos. The myriad of sites and attractions in and around San Angelo, make any visit delightful.
