Visiting Big Bend Country

A west Texas adventure awaits as you enter Big Bend Country. Check out the charm and southern comfort of Odessa when you visit the World’s Largest Jack Rabbit. Make your way into Odessa from nearby cities like Big Spring, and Monahans.

In the far reaches of west Texas you’ll find El Paso. Only minutes from nearby Anthony, El Paso is a unique border town. Because of it’s proximity to Mexico, El Paso features a rich blend of Mexican-American culture and it’s own historic, early American heritage. If you’re flying into El Paso you’ll land at the El Paso International Airport, just one of a wealth of airports located throughout the Lone Star State.

Late summer and early fall are prime times for Texas college football, and El Paso is no different. Visit the campus of the University of Texas-El Paso and head to the Sun Bowl Stadium – watch as the Miners battle the Oklahoma Sooners on September 1, their home opener.

For a bit of cultural and historical perspective, wrangle up the kids and visit the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo. A sovereign nation, the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo was established in 1682, and is comprised of more than 1,600 Tigua Indians. Take the family and enjoy live, ceremonial performances, and explore the local buildings.

Head east into Abilene. Here, you’ll experience sterling examples of southern hospitality – don’t miss Frontier Texas!, a charming and well-visiting historic museum. During your tour of Frontier Texas!, don’t miss Century of Adventure, a permanent exhibit.

After a morning spent reliving the historic frontier days of west Texas, take the kids over to the Abilene Zoo for an animal watching adventure. Dubbed Abilene’s no. 1 attraction, the Abilene Zoo features free admission for visitors 3 years of age and younger. Be sure to visit the zoo and be one of the 200,000 yearly visitors.

A smaller city within the Big Bend region, San Angelo is set north of Sonora, and south of Abilene, nestled at the southern shores of Lake Nasworthy. Once in San Angelo, find your way to the very cozy and easily located Best Western hotel. Gather the gang and head to the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, where on August 16, they’ll host the Downtown Art Walk – a free event.
