Visiting Big Bend Country

A visit to west Texas is always an adventure, and this season Big Bend Country is as exciting as ever. Road travelers marvel at a variety of attractions along the way to destinations like Pecos, Monahans, and Midland. A stop in Odessa, for instance, rewards weary road warriors with a glimpse World’s Largest Jack Rabbit.

The neighboring communities of Anthony and El Paso straddle the Rio Grande in the furthest western reaches of the Lone Star State. El Pase is also set against the United States-Mexico border, coloring the community with a rich blend of Mexican-American culture to complement it’s own historic, early American heritage. Still, fall is time for a distinctly all-American pastime – college football, and El Paso is no different. Visit Sun Bowl Stadium to witness the University of Texas-El Paso Miners in action, select Saturdays through November 29th, when they close out the season against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders.

The whole family can gather invaluable cultural and historical perspective through a visit to the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, located with El Paso County. The Ysleta del Sur is a sovereign nation comprised of more than 1,600 Tigua Indians. Explore centuries-old structures and check the fall 2014 schedule at the Tigua Indian Cultural Center for the chance to browse array of jewelry, artifacts, and timeless mementos and enjoy ceremonial performances.

To the east in Abilene, you’ll find prime examples of southern hospitality and country charm – perhaps best represented at Frontier Texas!, a popular historic museum. During your tour of Frontier Texas!, make sure to check out Century of Adventure, and a range of other traveling exhibits calling the museum their temporary home.

Now that the unforgiving summer heat has been escorted out by cooler fall weather, it’s a perfect time to visit the Abilene Zoo for an animal watching adventure. Arguably Abilene’s best attraction, the Abilene Zoo boasts over 1,000 animals representing 250 different species. Best of all for families traveling with young children, the zoo offers free admission for visitors three years of age and younger.

Nestled at the southern shores of Lake Nasworthy, San Angelo is set north of Sonora and south of Abilene. The modest town is the proud home to the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, the flagship venue for the Third Thursday Downtown Art Walk. On the third Thursday of every month, start at the museum and make your way through art numerous galleries, merchants, and pubs with local crafts and creations on display. A free trolley is even available to transports guests around the area from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
