Visiting Big Bend Country
Spring and summer see the people of Texas’ Big Bend Country taking to the outdoors to soak up the near-ceaseless sunshine. Adventures await in numerous parks and getaways, and communities from Abilene to Amarillo to El Paso welcome visitors with a wealth of special events, festivals, and family-friendly fun.
This season, take advantage of beautiful and sunny weather by hitting the links – Big Bend Country is home to countless first-rate golf courses. Players in Amarillo and Canyon head to the Comanche Trail Golf Course to practice their swings, Odessa and Midland visitors play at Ratliff Ranch Golf Course Links, and visitors to El Paso and Anthony tee off at Ascarate Municipal Golf Course.
Lubbock fills with color on April 16th and 17th, when the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center hosts the 2016 Lubbock Arts Festival. It’s two days of visual arts, paintings, music, performances, and more, with artists and performers coming from all over the country to show their stuff.
It’s warming up in El Paso and it’s easy to work up a good thirst – quench it at the 2016 Sun City Craft Beer Festival on April 30th. That’s when the Convention Center Plaza in El Paso fills to the brim with craft beers and tasty foods. Get your VIP passes now for all sorts of special access. The pours start flowing at noon.
The party continues in El Paso with the 2016 El Paso Downtown Street Festival. It’s a two-day festival set in downtown El Paso featuring everything from headlining concerts by the Goo Goo Dolls and Seether to food and other festivities.
To the north, Historic downtown Abilene hosts three days of book readings, panel talks, art displays, and more, as part of the 5th Annual Children's Art & Literacy Festival, June 9th through 11th. Bring the kids and encourage them to explore the virtually infinite world of reading.
On July 18th, eight blocks of historic Route 66 in Amarillo are shut down to serve as the grounds of the 2nd Annual Route 66 Festival. Celebrating the roots of the legendary route, the festivities feature live music, tasty food, classic car shows, and a lively market. It all starts at 10 a.m.
