Hard Hits in Texas College Football
Check Out The Southwestern Athletic
Comprised of 10 schools from Mississippi, Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, and Louisiana, the Southwestern Athletic Conference was established in 1920, with football teams competing at the Football Championship Subdivision level. Two of the oldest members of the conference both call Texas home – Texas Southern University, and Prairie View A&M.
Texas Southern University, found in Houston, was established in 1927, and fielded a competitive football for the first time 20 years later in 1947. When you’re traveling through the Houston area, plan a visit to the BBVA Compass Stadium, a 22,000-seat marvel they share with the Houston Dynamo of the MLS.
For travelers flying into Houston, you’ll land at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Before all the game day festivities begin, plan a visit to the Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary, or take the kids for a tour of Space Center Houston.
Prairie View A&M is close to the Houston area, set in the city of Prairie View. A friendly little city, Prairie View is only minutes from Brenham – make the trip west and check out the Monastery of St. Clare Miniature Horse Farm, a unique way of exploring the area before game day arrives.
Once game day does arrive, make your way to Blackshear Field and watch as the PVAMU Panthers take on the rest of the Southwestern Athletic Conference in exciting college football action.
