Visiting San Antonio & Southern Plains
Travel in to San Antonio and the Southern Plains during late summer and into early fall for a uniquely Texas experience. From the heart of the River City, to the outskirt towns like San Marcos, and Hondo – there’s a good time in store for every member of the family.
San Antonio is one of the most populous cities in Texas, and with that distinction comes an array of eclectic and attractive sights and activities. It’ll be difficult for you to visit San Antonio and not tour the popular San Antonio River Walk. This five-mile stretch of boutique shops, restaurants, and historic sights, runs along the San Antonio River, and was first built in 1956. Since then, it’s been added to and improved, making it one of San Antonio’s premier destinations – great for an afternoon stroll, or an evening out on the town. Make the trip in from nearby cities like New Braunfels, or Lytle and experience the Taste of the River Walk on September 12-13.
Looking for a bit of sporting fun? Look no further than the AT&T Center, home of the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA, and the San Antonio Silver Stars of the WNBA. The Spurs’ season tips off in late October. In the mean time, be sure to catch the Silver Stars take on the Phoenix Mercury, on August 19. The AT&T Center is a quick drive from nearby cities like Floresville, and Gonzales.
There’s no better time to explore San Antonio than summer. Traveling with the kids? Perfect. Head to the SeaWorld San Antonio, set just 20 minutes west of downtown San Antonio. Wrangle up the kiddos and visit SeaWorld San Antonio on September 1, for their annual Labor Day Fireworks Celebration. Residents and travelers make the trip in from nearby cities like Kerrville, Freer, and Cotulla for the yearly festival – don’t forget your camera.
If the kids are looking for less of an aquatic adventure, and yearn for thrilling coasters and speed rides, head over to Six Flags Fiesta Texas. Less than 18 miles north of downtown San Antonio, Six Flags Fiesta Texas features rides like the Superman: Krypton Coaster, and the Six Chuter. During the summer, take advantage of the park’s summer concert series when Meg and Liz perform on August 8.
As you make your way through San Antonio, you’d be remiss if you didn’t take a quick tour of The Alamo. One of the most historic sights in the Lone Star State, The Alamo was built in 1724, was home to missionaries, and later housed some Spanish Military. Visit The Alamo on October 6 for First Saturday at The Alamo, a monthly event that allows guests to experience an interactive living history. Travel in from Cuero, or Sonora for the experience.
