Visiting San Antonio & Southern Plains

Fiesta San Antonio is an Alamo City tradition, Featuring fun for all, the 2014 Fiesta runs April 10th through 27th. The Festivities include no less than six parades, among them the Lackland Fiesta Military Parade, Texas Cavaliers River Parade, and the much-anticipated Battle of flowers Parade. Celebrate the customs and culture of San Antonio this April.

San Antonio, the heart of south central Texas, celebrates its namesake mission at The Fiesta in June. The 2014 fiesta is held at Mission San Antonio de Padua June 8th, featuring a full day of events beginning with the Fiesta Mass at 11 a.m. An authentic Texas BBQ follows along with an afternoon of local Bluegrass and Mariachi music.

Rappel 50 feet down into Devil’s Pit, pan for gemstones, or dig for fossils – all at the Caverns of Sonora, a National Natural Landmark. Located 10 miles west of the city of Sonora, the Caverns of Sonora are known as spectacular show caves, and a must see destination for travelers near Sonora.

The Texas Water Safari, includes The World’s Toughest Canoe Race passes through the south Texas plains in June. The course includes 260 miles of challenging rivers including the San Marcos River, and Guadalupe River. The world’s toughest canoe race begins on June 14th, and passes through Gonzales at mile 86. Paddlers must reach the checkpoint by 5 p.m. on Sunday. Monday brings paddlers to Cuero at mile 161, with a deadline of 10 p.m.

After celebrating 100 years of being a city, the community of Three Rivers begins its second century in 2014. The April tradition of The Three Rivers Salsa Festival continues into its 15th year on the Three Rivers town square. Meanwhile, 10 miles south, George West makes a great 4th of July destination for an old fashioned picnic on the Courthouse Lawn. Celebrating its 100th birthday in 2014, George West holds its official Centennial Celebration in September.

This is the season for action at the Shady Oaks Speedway, six miles north of Goliad off Highway 77A. The 2014 season opens an April kid’s foot race followed in May by the Memorial Day Race ASCS Sprint 360’s. Don’t miss the Bicycle Giveaway on August 23rd – a great family night at the races. September 2014 brings the track's last points night, and the powder puff and mechanics races on the 6th.
