Visiting San Antonio & the Southern Plains
Make summer travel plans soon, and be sure to include a visit to Texas on the agenda. Head for the San Antonio area out in the Southern Plains where you’ll find a whole slate of impressive sites to explore, parks and other outdoor destinations to tour, and there’s even a popular road trip for you to try.
San Antonio is sprawling metropolis, and while the Lone Star State as a whole offers a wide array of exceptional attractions, what you’ll find in San Antonio and nearby suburbs is second to none. From the excellent amusement parks of SA, Six Flags Fiesta Texas is a can’t-miss, to the historic sites and sports teams, you and the family will not be disappointed during your stay this summer.
Make sure you plan a visit to San Antonio for September 12th – and when you do, head for the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. You won’t want to miss your chance to see Kraftwerk live on stage. Blending music and visual art, this musical project is internationally known, and should be a must on your travel list. Make the drive in from nearby Lytle and enjoy the performance.
Just over a month later in San Antonio, enjoy the 11th Annual San Antonio Beer Festival. Held this year at Maverick Park, the San Antonio Beer Festival is a one-day event (October 15th) from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. There’ll be over 85 breweries pouring more than 350 types of craft beer – pick out your DD and taste away. The drive in from Elmendorf and Schertz is quick.
As late summer turns into autumn, college football gears up for plenty of exciting action in the San Antonio area. Plan for a stay in the pleasant city of San Marcos – this is Bobcats country. The Texas State University Bobcats football team is a major draw for football fans in the area. Head for Bobcat Stadium for their home opener on September 24th when the Houston Cougars are in town. Later in the season, the Idaho Vandals pay San Marcos a visit on November 12th.
Your visit to the Southern Plains won’t be complete until you swing by Floresville. On October 1st, Floresville hosts their annual Taco Trample 5K Run & Walk. You’ll run (or walk, if you prefer) through the historic neighborhood of The Villages at River Bend starting at 8 a.m. – and yes, when you finish the race, there will be tacos.
Another must-see event in Floresville is the annual Floresville Peanut Festival. Held during the second weekend of October, which happens to the 6th through 8th this year, the Floresville Peanut Festival features a parade, food vendors, games for the kids, and plenty more.
