Visiting San Antonio & Southern Plains
San Antonio, the dynamic urban center of the South Texas Plains region, welcomes summer as it descends quickly across the region. Home of the Alamo and ground zero of Texas independence, San Antonio is full of attractions like the San Antonio Museum of Art and the San Antonio Riverwalk, which is lined with shops, restaurants and bars. Summer is the season for a visit to SeaWorld San Antonio, Six Flags Fiesta Texas and the White Water Bay water park, and the San Antonio Children’s Museum. Among summer’s events, the neighborhood of Balcones Heights fills the amphitheater at Wonderland of the Americas with Jazz each July and August Friday evening.
Kerrville makes a great start or end to summer fun. The 2013 Kerrville Folk Festival runs May 23rd through June 9th, offering great Memorial Day weekend events like the Children’s Concert at Threadgill Theater, a Sunday Folk Song Service with Rev. Charles Sumners at Chapel Hill, and live music, food and crafts at Kennedy Outdoor Theater. See more than 100 performances, featuring some of Texas' best performers, at the Kerrville Folk Festival.
Sutton County Fairgrounds fills with Texas tradition at the 2013 Sonora Outlaw Pro Rodeo June 27th to 29th. Along with the rodeo, the Sutton County Days Parade kicks off Saturday’s Sutton County Days celebration at Sutton County Park. One of Sonora’s largest and most popular festivals, Sutton County Days & Outlaw Pro Rodeo features the excitement of authentic outdoor Texas rodeo, arts and crafts, and live entertainment.
The South Texas rodeo tradition hits the community of Cuero July 19th and 20th. The 2013 Lester Meier Rodeo is a classic western rodeo held at the Cuero Rodeo Arena. Dewitt County residents and visitors gather for the excitement of Cuero’s Lester Meier Open Pro Rodeo featuring double tough rough stock for eager riders to test their skills. See the Lone Star Marshall Posse perform and laugh at the antics of Darrell Tittman between events.
Urban excitement and fun abound in San Antonio, from the Fiesta Noche Del Rio at the Arneson River Theatre on the Riverwalk to summer Dive In Movies at Splashtown San Antonio. Crockett Park hosts the 11th Annual San Antonio Summer Art & Jazz Festival. The 2013 SAS Fest launches Labor Day Weekend.
