Visiting Amarillo, Lubbock & the Panhandle

Amarillo, the heart of the Texas Panhandle, is a classic mix of old-west Texas heritage and the biggest and best of today’s modern Texas. A cultural and business hub for the Texas Panhandle, Amarillo is a destination for the bordering states of Oklahoma and New Mexico. The city is easily accessible by air through Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport and by automobile via Interstate 40. In days gone by Amarillo was a popular stop on Historic Route 66, and the city has preserved many nostalgic sights seen by today’s travelers. Visit Amarillo in September for the popular Texas Panhandle Tri-State Fair and Rodeo. The 2011 festivities run from September 16th through 24th – nine days full of pure Texas fun and excitement. See the tops in Texas livestock, agriculture and rodeo, and in addition don’t miss the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show and the Bengal Tiger Encounter. Join the fun at the Calf Scramble, Mutton Bustin’ and the Arm Wrestling Classic, all at the Tri-State Fairgrounds on 10th Avenue in Amarillo.

Rodeo Fans be sure to check out the World Championship Ranch Rodeo, November in Amarillo. 2011 events run November 10th through the 13th at the Amarillo Civic Center. Dedicated to preserving the heritage, skills and lifestyles of real working cowboys, Amarillo’s World Championship Ranch Rodeo showcases the most talented and skilled cowboys in the country. There is no better place than Amarillo, the heart of Texas cowboy country, to host this event.

The small Texas town of Post, in the southern Panhandle region is the gem of Garza County. This charming Panhandle town is nestled near the Llano Estacado plateau and offers travelers unique and beautiful surroundings and a glimpse of Texas Panhandle history and heritage. Outdoor recreation abounds at Lake Alan Henry near Post, and hunting enthusiasts enjoy sites like the Lott Ranch, Miller Ranch and Beach Family Ranch outfitters surrounding Post.

Stroll through downtown Post and take in the site of the Historic Garza Theatre, carefully restored and an active performance venue, the Garza County Museum housed in the original Post Sanitarium and the CCA Heritage House next door. Travelers along Interstate 20 find Sweetwater a pleasant stop along the way. Located at the southern end of Texas Panhandle country near the intersection of US 84, which heads north past Post to Lubbock. Home of the world’s biggest Rattlesnake Round-Up, there are plenty of less exciting reasons to enjoy a stop in Sweetwater. Fall visitors are likely to see the lights of Sweetwater’s Mustang Bowl lighting the weekend sky – home of the Sweetwater high school Mustangs and the pride of the town.
