Visiting Amarillo, Lubbock & the Panhandle
The Texas Panhandle and Plains – Rattlesnakes, Roughnecks, Bombers and Bandits – and these are just a few of the LSFL indoor football teams. Local cities conjure up images of Texas’ old west heritage and culture. Amarillo, located on Interstate 40, is hub of commerce and culture for the north panhandle area. Home of Cadillac Ranch and the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum, Amarillo makes a great stop for travelers. Wichita Falls, home of Midwestern State University and Sheppard Airforce base, anchors the eastern rim of the Panhandle Plains offering a glimpse of great Texas cities to the west.
The Lone Star Football League season is here and across the Texas Plains and Panhandle region. The Amarillo Venom, Odessa’s West Texas Roughnecks, Laredo Rattlesnakes and Abilene Bombers along with the 2013 addition San Angelo Bandits, kick off 2013 season play in March and battle it out through June. The Venom are the reigning champions and face off with opponents at the Amarillo Civic Center.
March brings the Third Annual Outlaws & Legends to Abilene. Delay your celebration of Texas Independence Day and get tickets for Outlaws and Legends on March 22nd and 23rd at the new Back Porch of Texas. Located in the Sears Park area of northwest Abilene the 2013 schedule includes headliner Merle Haggard – Outlaws and Legends is a must for country music fans.
The Expo Center of Taylor County, located in Abilene north of the Abilene Regional Airport, hosts the 2013 Western Heritage Classic. Showcasing Ranch Rodeo the Abilene classic is held May 9th through 11th. Working ranches from across the Plains and Panhandle area compete, demonstrating their skills at roping, wild cow milking and branding among the events. Join the excitement as authentic Texas cowboys and ranch hands showoff their skills.
The Texas Panhandle Heritage Foundation presents the outdoor musical drama Texas at Palo Duro Canyon beginning in June. The production takes the stage at Pioneer Amphitheatre in Palo Duron Canyon State Park, thirty-miles east of Canyon. Opening night for the musical Texas’ 2013 season is May 31st. The snow runs Tuesday through Sunday for the season.
Athletes looking for a challenge, consider the Ironman 70.3 at Buffalo Springs Lake, 5-miles southeast of Lubbock. Time to gear up the training for the 2013 Buffalo Springs Lake Ironman held June 30th. After a 1.2-miles open water swim in Buffalo Springs Lake, the bike course takes riders on farm to market roads over 7 challenging hills. The run is an out and back flat asphalt course with three hills topping of the Lubbock challenge.
