Visiting Amarillo, Lubbock & the Panhandle

Amarillo and the surrounding Texas panhandle comprise much of Texas’ north and northwestern regions. A focal point of activity in the area, Amarillo is home to Cadillac Ranch, a unique art display set just off I-40 of, you guessed it, Cadillacs. If you’re flying into the area, you’ll most likely land at the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport, just one of the many fine Texas airports.

You’ll also enjoy a visit to Lubbock, set south of Amarillo. Late summer and early fall means it’s college football time in Lubbock – just one of the many Texas college football teams. Home to the Texas Tech University, fans travel into Lubbock from nearby cities like Plainview, and Levelland to watch the Texas Tech Red Raiders football team take on the rest of the Big 12 Conference. Visit the Jones AT&T Stadium on September 15 and cheer on the Red Raiders as they battle the New Mexico Lobos.

If you’re traveling with the family, one of Lubbock’s more family friendly attractions is Mackenzie Park. At 248 acres, Mackenzie Park features a wealth of scenery and fun, including the Joyland Amusement Park – perfect for a late summer, or early fall visit.

Back in Amarillo, enjoy a Texas-sized steak at the Big Texan Steak Ranch. An Amarillo staple, the Big Texan Steak Ranch opened in 1960 and has been serving up delectable delights ever since. Patrons travel in from nearby cities like Clarendon, and Dumas for a tasty steak.

Travelers from Hereford, and Vega make their way into Amarillo for visits to the Don Harrington Discovery Center – and you should, too. Be sure to explore the Robots + Us exhibit, which is open through January 2013. Be sure to let the kiddos check out the KinderStudio for hands-on science experiments.

East of Amarillo is Wichita Falls. Known as the City that Faith Built, Wichita Falls is a charming and delightful late summer destination. Visit the Castaway Cove Waterpark for family festivities.
