Visiting Amarillo, Lubbock & the Panhandle
Summer is the season to get in touch with a different kind of Texas. Far from the bustling metros of Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, Texas Panhandle communities like Amarillo, Lubbock and Wichita Falls present plenty of personality while preserving the heritage, culture, and spirit of the Old West.
Amarillo, accessible via Interstate 40, is hub of commerce and culture for the north panhandle area. Attractions like Cadillac Ranch and the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum make it a must-stop for road tripping families.
And what better place to enjoy a Texas-sized steak at the Big Texan Steak Ranch? An Amarillo staple, the Big Texan Steak Ranch opened in 1960 and has been serving up delectable delights ever since. Patrons travel in from nearby cities like Clarendon, and Dumas just for a taste.
Sports fans feel the excitement the Lone Star Football League to the Panhandle and Texas Plains. The Amarillo Venom, Odessa’s West Texas Roughnecks, the Laredo Rattlesnakes, the Abilene Bombers, and the San Angelo Bandits kicked off the 2016 season in March and will battle it out through June – meaning things are starting to heat up before the climatic end. See the action at Venom home games at the Amarillo Civic Center in Amarillo.
Visit the Llano Estacado Winery in Lubbock for the 19th Annual Clay & Wine Festival on June 13th and 14th. In addition to a wide variety of fabulous fermentations, this free wine tasting event also features live music from Kenny Maines, and Jenni Dale Lord.
Runners, swimmers, and cyclists are already training for the Ironman 70.3 at Buffalo Springs Lake, five miles southeast of Lubbock. Held on June 28th, the “old school” triathlon race gives participants the chance to snag one of 40 qualifying slots for the 2016 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Austria.
