Kid-Friendly Options in Big Bend Country
Family Fun in Central & Western Texas
Western Texas – sometimes referred to as Big Bend Country – is home to Lone Star cities like El Paso, Abilene, and Odessa. Plenty of parks, museums, and kid-friendly attractions reside in these cities, so be sure to bring the family.
Check out Ysleta del Sur Pueblo – where you and your family are welcome to explore a real Native American village. Set in El Paso, Ysleta del Sur Pueblo is a federally recognized sovereign nation, first established in 1682. Be sure to stop by the Tigua Indian Cultural Center, or celebrate annual holidays like Salida de Los Santos and Independence Day.
Ever been to Abilene? Set in central Texas, Abilene is a kid-friendly town if ever there was one. Take the family to the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature, or to Frontier Texas! for a real taste of the Old West lifestyle. Abilene is also home to over 1,000 acres of parkland, plus the Abilene Zoo.
The Abilene Zoo first opened in 1966, and is now one of the more popular attractions in the city. The 13-acre Abilene Zoological Gardens is home to over 500 animals and 200 species, plus an impressive collection of permanent exhibits. Strut across the Wetlands Boardwalk, explore the Tropical Aviary, or pay a visit to the Creepy Crawler Center – known as the Venom Shack. Just don’t leave without hand-feeding the giraffes.
For picnics, hiking, and stargazing, visit Big Spring State Park. Set in Big Spring, this 382-acre state park also features history exhibits in the park interpretive center, scenic drives, and ranger programs for the little ones.
A family adventure awaits in Big Bend Country.
