Visiting the Greater Houston Area

Spring and early summer are the times to visit Houston. The breezy and comfortable weather has not yet given way to the late-summer’s humidity, and people throughout Space City and surrounding communities are outside celebrating with a variety of special events, festivals, sports, and other activities.

This season marks the return of Major League Baseball and the Houston Astros draw fans of America’s Pastime far and wide as they go to bat at Minute Maid Park. After their home opener on April 6th versus the Cleveland Indians, the Astros continue to host home games through the end of September. Check the schedule during your visit to enjoy a day at the ballpark.

The whole family can a sense of the city’s rich cultural offerings in Houston's Museum District without breaking the bank this season. The Children’s Museum of Houston offers free admission on Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., as does the Houston Museum of Natural Science, Thursdays after 2 p.m. You can even spend an entire Thursday appreciating the collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston for free – doors are open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Houston combines Mardi Gras traditions from New Orleans, the Caribbean, and Brazil into the Memorial Day Weekend Houston Carnival Show & Parade. The 2015 Carnival Houston is May 23rd at Discovery Green. Get your costume and join the parade or watch it unfold as the Houston Hipsters, Mardi Gras Krewe, and Rio Revelers samba down the thoroughfare.

Celebrate our nation’s independence at Elanor Tinsley Park this July 4th. Mayor Annise Parker’s official Fourth of July event, Freedom Over Texas 2015, will light up the famous Houston skyline with a breathtaking fireworks display. Bring lawn chairs and blankets and stay for the music – this year’s festivities feature ive concert stages featuring a mix of national, regional and local talent.

Galveston, southeast of Houston, is the place for perfect romantic getaway any time of year, but summer is arguably the best time to experience its 32 miles of beaches, first-class shopping and dining options, and historic Broadway Avenue attractions like Ashton Villa, Bishop’s Palace, and the Moody Mansion.
