Visiting the Greater Houston Area | Fall 2014

The heat has finally dissipated and the people of Houston and surrounding communities like The Woodlands, Galveston, and Deer Park are heading outdoors to celebrate fall’s mild weather. With an abundance of sports, fall festivals, special cultural events, and activities, there’s no better time to visit Space City.

H-Town sports fans have much to look forward to this season. September marked the return of NFL football and the Houston Texans started strong, leading their division through the entire month. The Texans continue to defend the gridiron at NRG Stadium on select Sundays through December 28th, when they battle the Jaguars in the last regular season home game.

The 2014-2015 NBA season gears up in late October and the Houston Rockets are shaping up to be serious contenders this year. James Harden and company take the court at Toyota Center when the Celtics come to town on November 1st. Check the schedule and catch the high-flying action during your Houston-area visit – regular season home games go through early April.

The nation’s second largest craft beer festival comes to the George R. Brown Convention Center, October 20th through 26th. Big Brew Houston 2014 features over 1000 craft beer varieties, with more than 40 Texas breweries on hand. Special events include the Big Brew Best Beard Contest, the Big Brew Grand Tasting Sessions, and Suds in the City – a party bus pub-crawl.

The Woodlands, Montgomery, and Navasota enjoy the quickest access to a Renaissance festival of truly Texas proportions. The city of Todd Mission, an hour northwest of downtown Houston, is home to the 2014 Texas Renaissance Festival from October 11th to November 30th. Walk along the shaded cobblestone paths of an authentically recreated 16th-century British village while browsing almost 400 vendors and feasting on a bounty of traditional food. This year, the 55-acre festival features eight themed weekends like Oktoberfest, All Hallows Eve, and Celtic Christmas, with hundreds of costumed performers and over 200 daily performances.

Fall visitors can also get a sense of Houston’s rich cultural offerings in Houston's Museum District without breaking the bank. The Children’s Museum of Houston offers free admission on Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., as does the Houston Museum of Natural Science, Thursdays after 2 p.m. You can even spend an entire Thursday appreciating the collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston for free – Its doors are open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
