Houston and Harris County Texas enjoy a seemingly endless summer of events, activities and fun. Celebrate a festive 4th of July at Houston’s Freedom Over Texas or choose a community celebration like the Katy Freedom Celebration. The Houston International Jazz Festival is a must for music fans. For theater buffs, it’s the Houston Shakespeare Festival. Houston has something for everyone this summer.
The season is here for the Houston tradition of baseball at Minute Maid Park, home field for the Houston Astros. Join fans in downtown Houston for a 2013 season home game. Soccer fans also enjoy a summer of Houston Dynamo action at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Houston launches the unofficial start of summer over Memorial Day Weekend with Comicpalooza 2013. Downtown Houston's George R. Brown Convention Center fills with sci-fi and fantasy May 24th through 26th for the 2013 Texas International Comic Con. Must see events include celebrity appearances by Patrick Stewart and Michelle Rodriguez and steampunk performers Abney Park.
Celebrate the 4th of July at Eleanor Tinsley Park at Houston Mayor Annise Parker’s official event, the Southwest Airlines Freedom Over Texas. The fun begins on Thursday afternoon with the Kids Zone, Family Fitness Challenge and Sky Stage entertainment. Don’t miss performances by Sheryl Crow and Martina McBride before the spectacular fireworks show caps off the evening.
The Woodlands, 30 miles north of Houston on I-45, is home to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, which offers a full schedule of spring and summer entertainment. See the Houston Grand Opera performance of La Boheme the Friday before Memorial Day Weekend. On June 8th, the Houston Symphony performs the music of Michael Jackson and in August the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival fills the Pavilion.
History buffs travel to Huntsville, north of The Woodlands, for the 150th Anniversary of Sam Houston’s Death and Funeral. The two-day event is July 26th and 27th, starting with an evening reception and presentation.
