Visiting Greater Houston Area

Spirits are high in Houston this summer – Between the Houston Beer Fest on June 7th at City Hall’s Herman Square, and Houston’s 4th Annual Caribbean Rumfest on August 16th and 17th at Jones Plaza, there are plenty of ways to drink and be merry in Houston.

August 16th is National Rum Day and Houston’s 4th Annual Caribbean Rumfest is the best way to celebrate. From The Woodlands to Sugar Land to Texas City, visitors and residents come from all over the Houston area to sample a variety of rum spirits and cocktails while learning about Caribbean history and enjoying live music all weekend.

However, Rumfest is just one of many Caribbean-themed celebrations going on in Houston this summer. In 2006, President George W. Bush declared June as National Caribbean-American Heritage Month and a monthlong celebration of that heritage is kicked of with the 2014 Caribbean American Heritage Month Festival on June 7th at Jones Plaza. Taste delicious authentic foods while watching lively cultural dancing and listening to fantastic native music. The fun starts at 2 p.m.

Celebrate America’s history of freedom at Elanor Tinsley Park this July 4th. Mayor Annise Parker’s official Fourth of July event, Freedom Over Texas 2014 will light up the famous Houston skyline with a breathtaking fireworks display. Bring lawn chairs and blankets and stay for the music – this year’s festivities feature performances by superstars Sheryl Crow and Martina McBride.

Nothing’s more American than baseball, and the Houston Astros invite you to enjoy America’s Pastime through the end of September at Minute Maid Park. One of only a handful of MLB stadiums with a retractable roof, the ultra-modern facility is an exciting place to be – even more so when division powerhouses the Oakland A’s come to town for a three-game series July 28th through 30th. If you miss July’s battle, the A’s come back for another slugfest on August 25th.

Galveston, southeast of Houston, is the place for perfect romantic getaway any time of year, but summer is arguably the best time to experience its 32 miles of beaches, first-class shopping and dining options, and historic Broadway Avenue attractions like Ashton Villa, Bishop’s Palace, and the Moody Mansion. Complement your visit this summer with songs of the South on June 28th, when the beloved Blind Boys of Alabama come to the The Grand 1894 Opera House. The Grammy-winning Gospel Music Hall of Famers start singing at 8 p.m.
