The Dyess Air Force Base, located south of Abilene, was established in 1942 and serves the United States Air Force with its 7th Bomb Wing unit. It's one of two North American B-1B Lancer bomber wings in the Air Force. With 36 aircraft, the base remains the Air Force's premier operational B-1B unit.
This 6,400 acre base is operated by nearly 13,000 military and civilian personnel and employs over 5,000 people. Its one of the largest employers in West Texas. The base has been a key component in Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Visit the base to view "Linear Air Park", the large collection of 30 aircraft from World War II to present times. McMurry University
A liberal arts college, McMurry University was founded in 1923, and offers 41 different degree programs. Set in Abilene, McMurry University fields competitive sports teams competing in the American Southwest Conference, a Division III conference. Plenty of college sports action for visitors to the Big Bend region of Texas.
Nicknamed the War Hawks, McMurry University football plays all their home games at Wilford Moore Stadium - check them out during the fall. The War Hawk baseball team play all home games at Walt Driggers Field.
