Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary

The Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary is located on the Bolivar Peninsula in the Galveston Bay. The sanctuary is comprised of salt marshes, mudflats, uplands and beaches. Thousands of wading birds, wintering shorebirds, including endangered Piping Plovers and threatened Snowy Plovers live in the sanctuary. Bird watchers from across the globe visit this Houston sanctuary each year.

The mudflats, near the mouth of the Galveston Bay, were formed by the sediments in the North Jetty that have built up since the 1800s. Invertebrates live in the mudflats and are joined by the shellfish and marine organisms living in the adjacent salt marshes. Visitors love to catch the blue crabs, flounder and trout that live along the Peninsula. Stay close to the sanctuary, in a comfortable Best Western guest room and enjoy your time in beautiful Houston.

William P. Hobby Airport

William P. Hobby Airport was originally a 600-acre private landing field, W.T. Carter Field, located in southeast Houston. In 1937, the airport was renamed to Houston Municipal Airport and began offering commercial flights. It's the oldest airport in the Houston area. The airport added an expanded terminal building in 1954 to allow for additional flights. In 1967, the airport was renamed to honor previous Texas governor, William P. Hobby.

Commercial flights were discontinued in 1969, after George Bush Intercontinental Airport opened in north Houston. Commercial flights resumed in 1971. The 80-acre airport offers flights through six commercial airlines. Terminal amenities include, Wi-Fi internet access, dining, shopping, convenient parking and ground transportation. Before your flight, stroll through the 1940 Air Terminal Museum to learn more about the city's aviation history. While in Houston, choose one of the several Best Western hotels, to enjoy comfortable accommodations and excellent guest services.
