Visiting Austin & Hill Country

Find yourself in Austin, the Texas Capital City, and you’re in luck. Known as the Live Music Capital of the World, music fans enjoy Live Music on the Plaza at Austin’s City Hall; Austin-Bergstrom International Airport features live music at five locations; and you can Grocery Shop to the sounds of live music at Austin’s Central Markets. Live Music Capital of the World is a moniker well deserved by Austin. Tour the Austin City Limits Studio; see how guitars are made at the Collins Guitar Factory; and take a trip back into Texas’ musical history at the Texas Music Museum. And music is just the beginning of an Austin adventure.

Austin’s Long Center hosts Ballet Austin performing The Nutcracker December 3rd through the 23rd. The 2011 production marks Ballet Austin’s 49th season and Texas’ longest running performance of The Nutcracker. Accompanied by the Austin Symphony Orchestra and featuring local celebrities like Senator Kirk Watson as Mother Ginger, celebrate the season with the tradition of The Nutcracker.

Remember Austin’s 2012 South by Southwest, recognized as one of the premier US film festivals. Scheduled March 8th through the 18th, plan now for tickets. SXSW is a popular event. The Austin Convention Center hosts the conference with screening and official party venues across downtown Austin.

Athletes mark February on your calendar for the LIVESTRONG Austin Marathon and Half Marathon. The 2012 Austin Marathon weekend is February 17th through the 19th. Events include the Paramount Break-a-leg 5K, half marathon and marathon on Sunday. Join fans and cheer on runners at the finish line on Congress Avenue near the historic Paramount Theatre.

The city of Round Rock is located 15 miles north of Austin. A classic Texas Hill Country Community, Round Rock is home to baseball’s Round Rock Express and their home stadium, The Dell Diamond. The Express are the Triple A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. Look for the 2012 season to begin in April. Dell Diamond is a community gathering place, central Texas foodies enjoy Taste of Round Rock at the Diamond on March 6th, just one of Round Rocks special events.

Mid-way between Austin and San Antonio along Interstate 35, travelers reach San Marcos. Home of Texas State University – San Marcos, a beautiful campus located at the headwaters of the San Marcos River. TSUSM’s Aquarena Center is home to the River Systems Institute and Edwards Aquifer Research and Data Center, making TSU San Marcos one of the best schools to study aquatic ecosystems.

Travel south of Austin 80-miles to reach San Antonio, the second largest city in Texas. This is the season San Antonio sparkles with its Holiday Lights tradition. The famous San Antonio River Walk is lit through New Year's day with over 1.8 million twinkling lights. The Museum Reach section of the River Walk features more than 100 underwater lights and fiber optic water features. And be sure to visit historic Alamo Plaza during the holidays for a festive photo in front of the Christmas Tree.

Basketball fans have high hopes for a quick start to the San Antonio Spurs season. The AT&T Center is anxious to light up the courts for the excitement of Spur’s Basketball. Meanwhile the AHL San Antonio Rampage are on their home ice at the AT&T Center through mid-April.
