Visiting Austin & Hill Country

Visitors to Texas Hill Country are pleasantly surprised at the unique Texas terrain. Start in Austin, not only the Texas State Capital but a hotbed of live music, hub of Travis Country and home to University of Texas at Austin. Travel south to San Antonio, the other large urban center of the Texas Hill Region. Many are surprised to find San Antonio is larger than Dallas, making the Texas River City the state’s second largest city. Melding with surrounding communities like New Braunfels, Gonzales and Hondo, rapid growth continues in the greater San Antonio area. Travelers looking for a San Antonio hotel, there are nearly 20 Best Western hotels in the region.

Settled by German immigrants, there may be no better place in Texas to celebrate Oktoberfest than Fredericksburg. About an hour and a half west of Austin off US-290, Fredericksburg celebrates its German heritage September 30th through October 2nd. The 2011 festivities make an ideal family getaway featuring the Kinder Park for kids, a German Bier Tent for Adults and Oompah for everyone. Don’t miss the TubJam kicking off Friday evening events, and join family and friends Saturday morning at Fredericksburg Market Square for the Chicken Dance Around the Square.

2011 Marks the 175th Anniversary of the Battle of the Alamo. Visit the first Saturday of the month for a living history tour of the Alamo featuring demonstrations and lectures on the Alamo and Texas Revolution. The Alamo hosts Visits to the Past September 17th, October 15th and November 12th with actors reenacting the tactics and tasks used during the period of the Battle of the Alamo. Hosted by the San Antonio Living History Association, these are free events.

Of course no visit to San Antonio is complete without a walk through the city on the River Walk – a three mile venture through downtown San Antonio’s cultural and business center. With family, you can’t leave without visits to SeaWorld San Antonio and Six Flags Texas. Six Flags Fiesta Texas is open weekends through fall; however White Water Bay closes after Labor Day weekend. SeaWorld also remains open weekends and holidays through fall. For an exceptional experience, check into the Beluga Interaction Program where you can actually get in the water with the rare white beluga whale.

San Antonio features an amazing array of Museums for visitors and locals. The McNay Art Museum is the first museum of modern art in Texas housing its galleries in a beautiful Mediterranean villa. The San Antonio Museum of Art is home to the country’s most comprehensive collection of Latin American art. There is nothing like a visit to the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum for a look at authentic old-west history and lore.
