Visiting Austin & Hill Country

While much of the country is still slogging through the winter, Austin and communities throughout the surrounding Hill Country are as beautiful as ever. Mild weather means the opportunities for outdoor adventures are endless, and Austin visitors won’t have trouble finding a sense of the town’s personality through its many unique attractions and entertainment options.

Mild weather means this season’s visitors have an opportunity to hit the green, and the Austin area boasts numerous top-flight golf courses. Head to the south side of town to play the 18-hole Jimmy Clay-Roy Kizer Municipal Golf Course, which is an especially nice facility. Players visiting Bastrop, Cedar Park, and Round Rock will definitely find it’s worth the short drive.

Get out and get active by joining in the 2016 Big Chill Adventure Race on January 24th. Starting in Bastrop, the demanding race sends participants along a course through some of the most scenic parts of the Hill Country, featuring biking, paddling, and running sections. Get to Osprey Hall at South Shore on Lake Bastrop early and get your stretches in – the race starts at 7 a.m.

To the far northwest in Sweetwater, the 2016 World's Largest Rattlesnake Roundup is a one-of-a-kind celebration of truly Texan proportions. March 11th through 13th, the Nolan County Coliseum hosts everything from a rattlesnake parade and carnival to dancing in the Jaycee Barn, the Sweetwater Rifle & Pistol Club Gun, Knife & Coin Show, a beard contest, and more.

Musicians and music lovers from all over the country descend upon Austin every march for the ever-popular South by Southwest Music Festival. Having grown to become an all-encompassing arts and cultural showcase, SXSW 2016 features countless bands performing in bars and venues along Sixth Street and throughout the downtown area. Check the schedule at Emo’s to see some of the biggest names performing at the festival.

Hungry? Not only does Austin lay claim to scores unique and legendary restaurants like Franklin Barbecue, but this season, a variety of festivals will have even more foodies flocking to ATX. The 2016 Austin Food & Wine Festival celebrates the Capitol City’s eclectic cuisine with special events like events like the Rock Your Taco Showdown and Taste of Texas. Check local schedules for individual event times.

Waco visitors head over to downtown’s Heritage Square for the the Texas Food Truck Showdown 2016 on April 2nd. Savor the flavor as a gathering of more than 40 food trucks from all over the state offer up their best creations to a panel of celebrity judges, while live music creates a festive atmosphere. The all-day fun gets started at 10 a.m. and culminates in a sunset movie showing. It’s fun for the whole family.
