Visiting Austin & the Hill Country | Late-Summer 2014

Even as Austin’s summer is cooling off, its event calendar is piping hot – take the 2014 Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival, which claims, “If you wanna beat the heat this summer, you gotta eat the heat.” Held at Fiesta Gardens in Austin, the 24th annual iteration of the event is expected to draw as many as 15,000 spicy food lovers to sample over 350 sauces while enjoying live music from the likes of LaTasha Lee and the BlackTies, Rosie and the Ramblers, and more.

Athletes from all over the country congregate at the Palmer Events Center, in the heart of downtown Austin, for the 2014 Tri-Rock Austin Triathlon on September 1st. The urban course sends participants through a swim course in Lady Bird Lake and a bike course passing over the Congress Street Bridge before finishing with a run along the Auditorium Shores running path.

For a sense of some of the niche culture Austin is known for, check out Fantastic Fest 2014, September 18th through 25th at the Alamo Drafthouse. Touted as the largest genre film festival in the country, Fantastic Fest is a celebration of all things “fantastic,” the events feature screenings of horror, fantasy, sci-fi, and action movies. What’s more, the Alamo Drafthouse is an experience in itself. Named the Best Cinema in America by Entertainment Weekly, the theater serves viewers food and drinks right at their seat and is famous for its strict policy requiring polite etiquette of moviegoers.

The LGBT community is rallied when the 2014 Austin Pride Festival & 5K takes over Fiesta Gardens, September 13th through 21st. Lining the shores of Lady Bird Lake, Pride Week events feature live musical performances, special film screenings, pride parades, and more. This year’s headlining musicians include Taylor Dane, while the popular WERK! Fashion Show will feature the creations of the designers of the hit TV show Project Runway.

For a window into Austin’s classical culture offerings, don’t miss Austin Museum Day, September 21st. Museums and cultural sites throughout the area offer a range fun and free exhibitions and activities centered around art, history, and youth education.

Residents and visitors of Temple, Copperas Cove, Salado, Waco, and beyond gather in Belton for the 2014 Central Texas State Fair, August 29th through 31st at the Bell County Expo Center. Entering its 27th year, the events draw dealers and suppliers from across the state to showcase their best offerings, while carnival rides, games, and food line the midways. There are even pro bull riding events, livestock shows, and special attractions like the Mark Riggs thrill show.
