Visiting Austin & the Hill Country | Spring 2015

The city of Austin is a vibrant and eclectic destination, and one of the premier cities to visit when you head to Hill Country in east-central Texas – in particular, during the spring. Make your travel plans soon and find a robust selection of attractions, from downtown Austin, to Marble Falls and beyond.

Known to many as Longhorn Country because of its connection to the University of Texas, Austin rarely disappoints visitors – you can explore the Lyndon B. Johnson Library & Museum, or tour the Austin Museum of Art. Hippie Hollow Park is popular during the spring, and the Jester King Craft Brewery serves all year long.

Any racing fan heading to Austin in April is surely eager to watch the MOTOGP Grand Prix of the Americas on the 10th. Make your way to the Circuit of the Americas race venue in Austin and see the elite motorcycle racers compete for top prizes. You can make the short drive in from nearby Bastrop or Round Rock for the races.

If you’re looking to sneak in a good run while visiting Austin, be sure to register for the 2015 Capitol 10K. Held on April 12th, the Capitol 10K starts on Congress Avenue and finishes up at the Auditorium Shores.

The Moontower Comedy Festival has grown into one of the premier events for stand up comedy. Held across four days, April 22nd though 25th, the Moontower Comedy Festival primarily has shows and events at the Paramount Theatre in downtown Austin. This spring, you’ll split your sides in Austin with a short drive in from Taylor or Cedar Park.

Ideal for the foodie in the group, the 21st Annual Louisiana Swamp Thing & Crawfish Festival is a must-see in Austin. Visit the Austin American Statesman parking lot on April 25th where more than 5,000 pounds of crawfish is consumed each year.

Keep exploring Hill Country this spring and visit Johnson City. West of downtown Austin, Johnson City is home to the Texas Hills Vineyards. Whether you’re a fan of the reds or white – Rosé, anyone? – Texas Hills Vineyards is an ideal place to visit for delightful tastes of locally made wine. Visit on March 21st for the Vino & Pasta event, where you’ll find homemade pasta perfectly paired with your new favorite Texas wine. You can make the short drive in from Blanco or Fredericksburg.

North of downtown Austin is Waco – make you keep this charming city on your spring travel agenda. Make your way to Waco from nearby Bellmead or Woodway and check out some of their most popular spring events. Tour the Balcones Distillery, or spend some time exploring the campus of Baylor University – it’s never too early to plan for college.

Visit Waco on April 16th and head for Waco Hall on the Baylor campus for a live performance from the Waco Symphony Orchestra. On April 18th, you can participate in the Waco Walk for Children at Cameron Park Zoo. Beginning on April 24th and running through May 10th, be sure to visit the Waco Civic Theatre where you and the family can enjoy a live performance of Shrek.
