Visiting Texas Gulf Coast
Galveston oh Galveston, and as the song goes you can still hear the sea waves crashing. Less than an hour southeast of Houston, Galveston and Galveston Island anchor the north end of the Texas Gulf Coast. Stretching over 350-miles along the Gulf of Mexico, the Texas Gulf region is filled with great beaches, wildlife and spectacular natural beauty. From Beaumont and small communities like Vidor, near the northern state line, south through Galveston, Port Lavaca and Corpus Christi seemingly endless festivals, events and fun draw visitors to the gulf. Celebrate Texas heritage and coastal industry at events up and down the gulf coast.
With a nod to its pirate heritage, the Gulf Coast city of Corpus Christi hosts the springtime Buc Days Festival. Organized by the Buccaneer Commission of Corpus Christi, Buc Days benefits students at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Opening Night for the Buc Days 2013 festival is April 25th on Shoreline Blvd at Kinney Street on the Corpus bayfront.
The American Bank Center Arena is home to the Buc Days Miller Lite Pro PRCA Rodeo, April 18th through the 21st. See some of the world’s most talented cowboys compete in their events at the Buc Days Pro Rodeo. Feast at the Buc Days Coors Light BBQ Tail Gate Party outside the American Bank Center and be sure to sign the kids up for the mutton bustin’ and calf scramble.
Corpus Christi hosts America’s largest relay marathon on May 18th. The 2013 Beach to Bay Relay Marathon continues the Texas tradition begun in 1976. As they say at B2B, your best time may be at the after party – join the fun on a six-person team or cheer your favorites on. North Padre Island is the start of the relay with the finish at McCaughan Park on Shoreline Drive. Stick around after the relay and enjoy live music, free pizza and beverages, and vendors.
Celebrate Texas Gulf coast style at the 2013 Texas Crab Festival, Mother’s Day Weekend. Held on the Bolivar Peninsula across the bay from Galveston on Crystal Beach, festivities feature live music, art, and lots of crab and seafood. The 28th year for the event join the fun May 10th through 12th. Bring the family along and head to Galveston and Crystal Beach for 3-days of great entertainment.
Aransas Pass, across the water from Port Aransas, celebrates the local shrimping industry at the Annual Shrimporee Festival. The 2013 celebration is June 14th through 16th marking the 65th year for the festival. With live entertainment, dancing, carnival rides and culinary events, Shrimporee is a full weekend of family fun.
