Visiting Texas Gulf Coast
There’s no doubting the sheer size of Texas – second only to Alaska in overall square millage, Texas blends a rare sophistication with southern charm, while never relinquishing it’s hold on history, and fully embracing the “everything’s bigger in Texas” motto. There’s much to see in do in the coastal region of Texas, full of unique and attractive experiences, most fit for the whole family.
Summer in the gulf region of Texas brings a slew of aquatic adventures from port cities like Corpus Christi and Portland, to more inland cities like George West and Victoria. Closer to Houston is Lake Jackson, and Galveston – don’t miss the Bodies Revealed exhibit at the Discovery Pyramid in Galveston. On display through September 9, Bodies Revealed gives you a detailed look at anatomical specimens that have been carefully preserved – without all that skin getting in the way.
Before you depart from Galveston, don’t miss out on a trip to Fort Travis Seashore Park. Set at the southern peak of the Bolivar Peninsula, Fort Travis Seashore Park yields sterling views of the Galveston Bay.
Further east, near the New Orleans border, is Beaumont. Travel in with the family during the summer and check out the Gator Country Wildlife Adventure Park and Restaurant. Perfect for families looking for a fun afternoon adventure, watch as the expert trainers interact with live gators, let the kids enjoy a hands-on experience with some of the smaller reptiles, and stick around for a nice lunch.
Looking for a sporting event while traveling through Corpus Christi? Don’t miss out on the Corpus Christi Hooks, the Double-A, minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros. Take in a home game at Whataburger Field when they take on the Arkansas Travelers on August 8. Fans travel in from as nearby as Robstown, to Refugio, an hour north.
Continue your tour of Corpus Christi with a visit to the Texas State Aquarium, home to an array of marine life, and a perfect family destination. Travel in from nearby Sinton, or Ingleside and have an experience the family will never forget at the Stingray Lagoon – hand-feed close to 30 stingrays.
A charming little city, Port Lavaca is set just inland from the Matagorda Bay, and is only minutes from Edna, and El Campo. Travel through Port Lavaca and do a little fishing along Matagorda Bay, or check out the interesting Calhoun County Museum.
