Thirty five miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico is El Campo. An affable and quaint city, El Campo is a jewel of the Texas Gulf Coast region and a short drive from nearby Edna. Mexican cowboys who used to run herds through the area called this area also known as "the camp," the English translation.
When the cowboys bedded down, they could see the lights of a little village called Prairie Switch. They said it looked like a "pearl on the prairie." When the city was incorporated in 1905, the city fahters used the Spanish words in naming the city. On your summer visit, head south and enjoy the pleasant waters of the Tres Palacios Bay. You'll also enjoy the Big Boggy National Wildlife Refuge.
