Visiting East Texas & Piney Woods
Start your east Texas adventure with a visit to College Station. Only minutes from nearby Bryan, College Station is a premier destination during late summer and into the fall. Home to the Texas A&M Aggies, many visitors travel in from nearby cities like Brenham, and Franklin. Head to Kyle Field, home turf of Aggies football, and watch as they take on the Florida Gators, on September 8. Texas is crazy for college football.
Venture east into Beaumont, a charming and scenic city set just inland from the Gulf. If you’re looking for more excitement of college football’s game day action, head to Provost Umphrey Stadium, on September 22 and watch as the Lamar Cardinals battle the Langston University Lions. Fans make the trip in from as far away Livingston, and Cleveland (TX).
If college football isn’t your thing, head to the Fire Museum of Texas for a comprehensive look at fire fighting service in Texas. Opened in 1986, the Fire Museum of Texas offers weekday tours at zero cost – take the kids and explore.
Continue your east Texas expedition with a visit to Palestine. Set southeast of Dallas, and not far from Mexia and Jacksonville, Palestine is an affable city, and home to the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility. Enjoy a nostalgic train ride along the Texas State Railroad, which departs from the Palestine Depot.
Northeast of Palestine is Kilgore. A pleasant and attractive city, Kilgore is home to the Lone Star Speedway – check it out on October 11, when they host the Lone Star Sprint Nationals, the first day of the three-day event. Join racing fans who make the trip into Kilgore from neighbor cities like Henderson, Marshall, and Longview.
Set along I-30, Greenville is the seat of Hunt County, and home to the Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum. Visit the museum on August 25, for the 7th Annual Heritage Dinner. Greenville is just the beginning of a line of cities set along a strip of I-30.
Head east from Greenville and you’ll find Sulphur Springs. Visit on August 10 and 11 and check out the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center, for the 5th Annual Black Gold Bull Riding Challenge and Extreme Bull Sport.
Just a bit further east is Mount Pleasant, the largest city in Titus County. Late summer and into early fall yield excellent fishing bounties at Lake Welsh, set just minutes from downtown Mount Pleasant.
Wherever you find yourself, be sure to enjoy all the southern hospitality of east Texas and the Piney Woods.
