The first U.S. settlement on the Rio Grande, Eagle Pass was established during the US - Mexico War. In 1849, the permanent Fort Duncan was founded. After the Civil War, the site became a burial plot for the confederacy. Today, Eagle Pass sits as an international gateway and tourist center as well as the seat of Maverick County along the border.
