Visiting Border Towns of Texas

Zapata, Laredo, Rio Grande City – the names alone evoke the rich heritage and culture of the border towns of Texas. The city of El Paso and its suburbs, including Anthony, anchor the far west tip of Texas. Women take note – El Paso is home to the Mighty Mujer Triathlon, an all woman super sprint event held in April. Celebrate Texas’ Wild West heritage southeast of El Paso in San Elizario at the Billy the Kid Festival, June 7th – 9th. And travelers north of Big Bend National Park, be sure to stop in Alpine at Railroad Blues for a evening of music at the world-famous beer & wine tourist trap.

The convergence of the Rio Grande River, the Pecos River and Devils River form one of the largest lakes in Texas, Lake Amistad. Located along the border northwest of Del Rio. The lake’s bass and catfish attracted anglers from across South Texas as well boaters and water recreation enthusiasts.

April brings the return of the oldest bull-riding event in the US to Del Rio, The George Paul Memorial Bull Riding SuperBull. The Val Verde County Fairgrounds welcomes the 36th Annual George Paul Memorial Bull Riding April 26th and 27th, 2013. Get your tickets to watch top bull riders compete for the Champion Buckle and enjoy a visit to Del Rio.

Laughlin Air Force Base is located seven miles east of Del Rio, past the community of Val Verde Park. Home of the 47th Flying Training Wing, Laughlin AFB is a premier training center for US military pilots. Current policy doesn’t allow military personnel to cross the border, adding more people and fun to the festivities and celebrations in Del Rio.

Located along 120 miles of the Rio Grande River, the World Birding Center is a collaboration of nine locations in Texas. Running from Roma, 12-miles west of Rio Grande City, the World Birding Center runs 120-miles east to South Padre island. The Bertsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park in Mission and Quinta Mazatlan, overseen by the City of McAllen Parks & Recreation, are also WBC sites.

Continuing east, the Estero Llano Grande State Park, 10 miles east of Donna and Resaca de la Palma State Park are WBC locations near the Rio Grande River. Further inland from the river, the cities of Edinburg and Harlingen have locations of the World Birding Center convenient to local South Texas water sources. The Rio Grande Valley is located at the convergence of the Central and Mississippi flyways, making a visit to the region a must for birding enthusiasts.
