Visiting the Border Towns of Texas

As the hot summer subsides, local event calendars are just warming up in communities along Texas’ southern border. From El PasoAnthony, and Clint in the west, all the way southeast to McAllen and Harlingen, a wealth of special events, festivals, and family-friendly fun abounds.

There’s still time to enjoy America’s Pastime – the El Paso Chihuahuas are nearing the climactic end of their season. Join baseball fans at Southwest University Park, where the Chihuahuas host home games until August 30th, when the team hosts the Oklahoma City Dodgers in the last home game of the season. Southwest University Park will also host the Triple-A National Championship Game on September 22nd.

Weekend visitors to El Paso can enjoy a little retail therapy while experiencing the unique culture of the downtown area as local shops and restaurants open up to offer special deals and menu items as part of the 2015 Shop Downtown event. Stop by on Saturdays and Sundays, all year long.

Southeast along the border in Laredo, Jarvis Plaza hosts the 2015 El Centro de Laredo Farmers’ Market, inviting visitors to browse homemade gifts, handcrafted goods, locally grown produce. The market is held every third Saturday of the month.

Then, on every first Friday of the month, 2015 CaminArte events highlight Laredo’s vibrant arts scene. Get a sense of the eclectic culture of Laredo, the Southwest, and beyond, as local, regional, and national artists showcase their work at the Laredo Center for the Arts.

As the weather cools off the fish of Falcon Lake come out of hiding, Zapata visitors enjoy especially convenient access to the water. Drop a line from Zapata-area shores or head southeast on U.S. Route 83 to reach Falcon State Park, where there are ample opportunities for fishing, boating, swimming, hiking and more.
