Visiting Border Towns of Texas

El Paso and Ciudad Juarez form the international metropolitan area of the Paso del Norte anchoring the far western tip of the Texas border with Mexico. Traveling east, the border towns of Texas include Del Rio, the friendliest little border town in Texas, Laredo and Zapata among others. Visit the Rio Grande Valley and enjoy the towns along the south Texas border.

The El Paso Sun City Music Festival is a great end to summer vacation. The 2013 SCMF is Labor Day Weekend, August 31st and September 1st at Ascarate Park, El Paso’s largest public park. The fun features three stages of live music, art installations and vendors. The lineup includes Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto and Alesso among the many.

Choose your favorite sport and take an October trip to Mission for the 2013 South Texas Outdoor Life Festival. Enjoy a Family Fun Run, individual 5K or pick from three different bike races. Mission’s Outdoor Life Festival even includes a kayak race for paddlers. Events take place at the Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park/World Birding Center in Mission.

The Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival celebrates its 20th annual gathering November 6th through 10th. Harlingen hosts the 2013 continuing the community tradition of a premier birding destination. Harlingen Municipal Auditorium Complex on Fair Park Boulevard is festival headquarters and location of the trade show and programs. Join the Welcome reception at the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum the evening of November 6th.

McAllen gives runners a great reason to keep training into the 2013 holidays. The City of McAllen presents the inaugural McAllen Marathon on December 15th. Events feature the full marathon, half marathon or four-person relay, all starting and finishing at the De Leon Soccer Complex. With average December weather from 50 to 71 degrees, its ideal running weather.

San Benito, in Deep South Texas just 20 miles northwest of Brownsville, is on the United States side of the Free Trade International Bridge. Visit the community of San Benito for the San Benito Chamber of Commerce’s lighted street parade – the longest running in South Texas. The 2013 Lighted Christmas Parade & Bazaar is December 14. Last minute shoppers check out San Benito’s December 21st Market Day. Visit the Market on Sam Houston Boulevard in downtown San Benito.
