Visiting Border Towns of Texas

Travel south Texas and take a Two Nation Vacation this summer. From El Paso and sister city Ciudad Juarez, to Brownsville and Matamoros there are multiple communities convenient for travelers to cross the border. Southeast Texas offers various border gateway communities filled with events, activities, and fun.

San Benito is known as the Resaca City in honor of the Resaca de los Fresnos waterway that winds through the community. San Benito and neighboring Harlingen are convenient to Matamoros, Reynosa, and Valle Hermoso, south of the border. The Free Trade International Bridge is 10 miles south of San Benito.

The city of Harlingen is called the Capital of the Rio Grande Valley, and is a gateway to premier outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, and birding. Summer visitors enjoy United League Baseball’s Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings at home on Harlingen Field. Enjoy a day at the ballpark with friends and family cheering on the RGV WhiteWings. Be sure to check out the shops and boutiques on Jackson Street, or for serious shopping head to Valley Vista Mall.

The San Benito, Harlingen area is 25 miles northwest of Brownsville, the busiest border crossing in southeast Texas. For air travelers, Brownsville’s South Padre International Airport is convenient to the communities of southeast Texas. While you are in Brownsville, stop by the Gladys Porter Zoo, and the Sabal Palm Sanctuary, two jewels of the city.

McAllen, 35 miles west of Harlingen, is another hub of south Texas culture and commerce. A visit to Quinta Mazatlan and McAllen’s World Birding Center is a must for travelers. Relax at the 1930’s historic home and tour the hummingbird garden, native butterfly garden, and bird feeding station. Mission, 6 miles west of McAllen, is home to Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley, a top birding destination in the U.S.

For a mouth-watering Fourth of July, travel north of McAllen 12 miles to Edinburg. The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce presents Texas Cook ‘Em, High Steaks at Edinburg Municipal Park July 4th and 5th. The 2014 event is the Rio Grande Valley’s biggest steak cook-off featuring T-bone steaks, chicken, ribs, and brisket. The fun includes live music, kid’s activities, and evening fireworks.
