Visiting the Border Towns of Texas
Summertime along the Texas border is a chance to experience the spice of life in towns like El Paso , Laredo, and McAllen. And this season visitors are invited to join in more special events, festivals, and family-friendly activities than ever.
The arts are alive in Laredo, and the 2016 CaminArte events are the pulse of the eclectic scene. Get a sense of the eclectic culture of Laredo, the Southwest and beyond as local, regional, and national artists present their work at the Laredo Center for the Arts on the first Friday of every month. It all gets started around 5 p.m.
And it doesn't stop there – Jarvis Plaza becomes a hub for homemade gifts, handcrafted goods, locally grown produce, and more at the 2016 El Centro de Laredo Farmers’ Market, which takes place every third Saturday of the month this spring and summer.
Weekend visitors to El Paso can also relax with a little retail therapy while gaining perspective on the unique culture of the downtown area this summer. On Saturdays and Sundays, all summer long, local shops and restaurants open up to offer special deals and menu items as part of the 2016 Shop Downtown event.
Though it's not quite the heavy hitters of the MLB teams in Dallas and Houston, America's Pastime can be enjoyed in El Paso. Join baseball fans at Southwest University Park, where the Chihuahuas host home games through the first week of September. Check the schedule during your visit to enjoy a day at the ballpark.
When summer cools down and fall hints at its return, the fish of Falcon Lake come out of hiding. Zapata visitors enjoy quick and easy access to the water. Drop a line from Zapata-area shores or head southeast on U.S. Route 83 to reach Falcon State Park, where there are ample opportunities for fishing, boating, swimming, hiking and more. What better way to celebrate surviving another summer?
