Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport
Encompassing 3,547 acres of the Texas Panhandle, the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport (AMA) serves the city of Amarillo. Established as English Field in 1929, AMA had its first commercial flight through Transcontinental & Western Air. Once the adjacent Amarillo Air Force Base closed in 1968, the airport began using some of their buildings for terminal use.
In 2003, the Amarillo airport was named for NASA astronaut Rick Husband – an Amarillo native who died aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia. The airport was thus visited by the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 2007, and the Space Shuttle Discovery in 2009.
